Portrait art of Holland's Golden Age is one of the most fascinating phenomena in the history of Western art, distinguished by a powerful realism, an immense diversity and, above all, a high artistic level. The National Gallery in London and the Mauritshuis in The Hague mounted a major exhibition on the subject in 2007. The main thread running through the exhibition is the chronological development of the portrait, interwoven with several themes like the individual portrait, the double portrait, the family portrait, the group portrait, militia and regents' portraits as well as children's portraits.Within each theme a selection of works are being shown which offer imposing and also exciting juxtapositions. Floral prints, motifs and designs are always in fashion, and never more so than when used as the fabric for an English summer dress. From the naturalistic to the painterly, from the graphic to the abstract, every summer almost every woman in Britain in the last 100 years has worn or wanted to wear a floral frock. «Floral Frocks» explores this unassuming cultural phenomenon from the beginning of the 20th century to the present in a series of broadly themed chronological chapters, each setting floral printed dresses as part of a wider socio-cultural context. Taken together the book will give a general design history, but also raises issues surrounding the zeitgeist of each era through the medium of looking at one specific garment (the dress) rendered in one specific way (floral print).The book discusses in detail over fifty floral printed dresses with over 140 illustrations which will show sumptuous details and full-length shots of the floral frocks with examples of historic and contemporary floral printed dresses from both museum and private collections. The majority of the dresses featured will be from the 1930s to the 1970s with names such as Horrockses Fashions, Tootal, California Cottons and Laura Ashley as well as designers including Christian Dior, Janice Wainwright and John Bates. The design and making skills of the countless home dressmakers and fashion firms whose names are now not remembered in history are also recognised in the selection of dresses featured in the book.Archive photographs of girls and women over the last 100 years, drawn from a variety of sources, have been reproduced. The firm of Tiffany & Co. has long been regarded as America's premier maker and retailer of fine luxury goods. This is especially true in the case of jewellery, an area in which the company emerged as an arbiter of taste and style by the mid-19th century. Charles Lewis Tiffany, one of the founders of the firm, was astutely aware of the desire of newly emerged elites for high-style jewels that would rival those owned by European aristocrats. The paintings of Adriaen Coorte form a striking group of works in still-life art of around 1700. At this time there were a few specialised still-life painters active in the Northern Netherlands and whereas his fellow still-life artists displayed a keen interest for profusion and luxuriance, Coorte found his strength in very simple depictions. Today, his work is much sought after among art lovers. In fact, the lack of pretension in his paintings appears to be the deciding factor in his ever-increasing popularity. This lack of pretension is evident from both the simplicity of the subject matter and the usually small size of his paintings. This highly readable publication appears in conjunction with an exhibition about Coorte, a grand 'small master'. As various paintings by him have been traced in recent years, the catalogue contains a complete description of his oeuvre, the first to appear since 1977.
