Gio Ponti (Milano 1891-1979) was founder of 'Domus', Europe's most influential architecture and design magazine. Artistic director of Richard-Ginori, the ceramics manufacturer. Hardy Amies epitomised understated British couture, emphasising the cut of fine materials by tailored construction. Untrained in dress-making, he achieved Vogue 1937 headlines with his 'Panic' suit, a reconstructed design of a staple in every woman's wardrobe, wittily named to reflect current events. Carlo Mollino (1905-1973) was one of the foremost figures in a generation of Italian architects. Eero Saarinen was born in Finland in 1910. After his family moved to the United States in 1923 Eero graduated from Yale University where he subsequently completed post-graduate work at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. This famous school of architecture and design was directed by his father Eliel and, it was here that Eero met Charles Eames and Florence Schust Knoll. The three became close friends and worked together on some of the most remarkable projects in the history of American and international design.Throughout his career Saarinen divided his time between architecture and design. He designed some of the most important post-Second World War buildings in America (the General Motors Technical Center, the MIT chapel and auditorium, the TWA Terminal at J.F.K. Airport in New York), and his objects, most of which manufactured by Knoll, are absolute icons of contemporary design. He died prematurely at the age of 51 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. 'Typology', volume 2 of the new series 'Christ & Gantenbein Review', presents more than 150 buildings located in Rome, New York, Hong Kong and Buenos Aires that have been analysed by the chair of Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. This selective and subjective inventory of metropolitan and essentially anonymous 20th-century building production provides a basis for urban project creation. In this new book, the buildings are documented with floor plans, axonometric projections, recent photographs and key information.
