Filled to the brim with images, this scrapbook of the 1930s overflows with nostalgia, for those who remember that extraordinary era. For those who do not, this wealth of imagery provides a vivid insight into a time when sliced bread had just reached the table and Butlin's holiday camps had recently opened. Life in the 1930s for many was not easy; for others, who had known Victorian times, the pace of change was frightening, and 'modern' life led to 'nerve tension'. Yet change brought a better standard of living and numerous new products helped the daily routine. Electrical appliances were a boon to housewives without servants, affordable motor cars made access to the countryside easier, new fun included Dinky Toys, Monopoly and a stream of delectable confectionery (Mars bars, KitKat, Black Magic, Cadbury's Roses). The aluminium milk bottle top made its appearance. Design was memorable for the red telephone kiosk, the Anglepoise lamp and the Underground map — all still in evidence today. The Royal Family went through a turbulent year following the death of George V, when Edward VIII decided he had to abdicate. The speeding motorist was hampered by 30 mph restrictions, and pedestrian crossings were guarded by Belisha beacons. By the end of the 1930s, television held exciting promise for the future, but a growing tension focused on impending war. The 1930s Scrapbook has drawn together the best from the Robert Opie Collection. The images are as bright today as when they were purchased in the shops. Coronation souvenirs, film and fashion magazines, fireworks, comics and Christmas crackers — all survived to tell a remarkable story.

With the death of Aubrey Beardsley in 1898, the world of the illustrated book underwent a dramatic and exciting change. The age of decadent black and white images of scandal and deviance was softened and coloured to delight rather than shock. A pastel toned world of childish delights and an innocent exoticism unfolded in the pages of familiar fables, classic tales and those children's stories like The Arabian Nights and Hans Andersen's Stories. Published with lavish colour plates and fine bindings, these were the coffee table books of a new age. As a result, a new generation of illustrators emerged to develop this burgeoning market, intent upon borrowing from the past, especially the fantasies of the rococo, the rich decorative elements of the Orient, the Near East, and the ethereal, fairy worlds of the Victorians. The masters of this new art form were artists like Edmund Dulac and Kay Nielsen, whose inventive book productions, with those of Arthur Rackham, became legendary. Even though France is the birthplace of Impressionism, German artists also played a crucial role in shaping this style of painting. The year 2010 marks the fifth centenary of Giorgione's death, which occurred in October 1510. This is one of the few certain facts relating to the painter: no signature attributable to him exists, nor have any autograph writings been found in archives. Were it not for two official documents regarding a painting of his dated 1507, formerly in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice and now lost, and the frescoes executed in 1508 for the Fondaco dei Tedeschi — all that remains of these is a fragment depicting a nude, now in the Ca' d'Oro — Giorgione might never have existed. In 1550 Giorgio Vasari sought to write a biographical and artistic account of him, which, however, he considerably revised, and sometimes contradicted, in the second edition of his Lives, published in 1568. This monograph is intended to highlight what is known about Giorgione against the backdrop of an extraordinarily vibrant Venice, where the presence of artists like Giovanni Bellini, Lorenzo Lotto, Vittore Carpaccio and many others less well-known was contemporary with that of the most outstanding members of a dynamic and sophisticated society.

Ocean Liner Posters tells the story of shipping companies and their ships through the art they produced — their posters. For a century, ocean liners were the only way to travel from one continent to another. Millions of passengers travelled on transatlantic routes: millionaires, occupying luxurious suites with dream decors, signed by the best artists of the time, and emigrants in search of a future, meagre savings in hand, huddled in third class — all sharing their journeys with tourists, soldiers and traders on the largest form of transportation ever built. This book charts the evolution of ocean liner posters from the first ship poster reproductions of the latter part of the nineteenth century, when the vessel's image appeared alongside information about the routes taken, through the Art Nouveau era, when the image of the ship began to take a key role in terms of visual importance. The Art Deco period allowed masters of poster art such as Adolphe Mouron Cassandre to create enduring works for the likes of Normandie or the Atlantique. The book continues tracing the timeline of these posters, through the postwar period until the demise of transatlantic routes, through to the sixties, which saw the poster being modernised.

»This volume, based on rarely seen Russian archives, traces the history of the silent film poster in Russia, starting with a poster designed by Paul Assaturov («Stenka Razin», 1908) in the style of ancient naïve Russian imagery to the latest advertise- ment for a silent movie by Yuri Pimenov from 1934. Full-page reproductions of 161 Russian silent film posters are presented here in chronological order — from the very beginning of the 20th century until the 1930s. These film posters are unique in their approach to representing films, creating new and original images — more evocative than descriptive. The movie is depicted through the use of expressive typography, geometric forms, minimalist illustrations and their distinctive technique of recreating photographs by hand. Works by famous artists of the time such as Alexander Rodchenko, the Stenberg Brothers, Yakov Ruklevsky, Nikolai Prusakov, Alexander Naumov and others are featured. After the Russian revolution in 1917 and the establishment of the Soviet Union in 1922, cinema played an important role in the dissemination of propaganda for the new regime. The Hoffmeister Collection is one of the best and most extensive private collections of antique and historic Turkmen knotted carpets in Western Europe and America. It competes alongside important collections from Western museums as well as those in Russia and Turkmenistan. As one of the first to do so, Hoffmeister has determined the age of these knotted works of the Turkmen with the aid of radio-carbon techniques.
