Описание: The inimitable works of art by Jeff Koons (*1955 in York, Pennsylvania), one of the most famous artists in the world today, have been causing uproars since the eighties. This publication is an in-depth examination of three major groups of works: The New (1980 87), Banality (1988), and Celebration (ongoing since 1994), each one of which represents a spectacular and consequential phase in Koons s oeuvre. Ready-made objects from The New are transformed in Banality into wondrous, provocative sculptures created with traditional craftsmanship. A few years later, painting and sculpture appeared on an even par in Celebration. Hence, these three influential, manifesto-like stages are capable of providing insight into the work and ideas of Jeff Koons.

Описание: In celebration of the 150th birthday of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) the Vienna Museum is presenting the first catalogue of its complete collection of the artist s works. The world s largest collection of Klimt s drawings around 400 provides an overview of thematic groups such as the Secession, sketches of the Faculty Paintings, or the nudes. In addition the book features a few paintings, including the portrait of Emilie Flöge (1902). It is one of Klimt s most famous paintings, and the first portrait of a woman in which the ornamentation in and of itself becomes a focal point. Last, but not least, there posters and prints that Klimt designed for the Viennese Secession, including a number of original drafts, as well as the first prints. The collection also contains unique memorabilia, such as the artist s smock, his death mask, and even a drawing by Egon Schiele of Klimt s body. Also featured are rare vintage prints of early portrait photographs and sculptures.

Описание: One of today’s best-known contemporary artists, New Leipzig School painter Neo Rauch (born 1960) blends the realistic figuration of Social Realism with Surrealism: brightly colored figures parade through upended environments, and multiple historical periods overlap in a single work. Most recognized for his paintings and drawings, Rauch has also created an impressive output of printed works over the past two decades, which visit the same themes as the rest of his output, and in Rauch’s own words “are accessories to my painting.” This publication presents the artist’s complete oeuvre of prints from 1993 to today, and celebrates Rauch’s gift of an edition of each of his prints to the town of Aschersleben in Germany, where he was raised. The collection will form the basis of a new art foundation and exhibition space, established in the artist’s name. Neo Rauch (born 1960) was born, reared and trained as an artist in Leipzig, where he continues to live. In August 2005, Rauch was awarded the chair of painting at Leipzig University.
Otto Dix and New Objectivity

Описание: “The Neue Sachlichkeit: I invented it.” Thus Otto Dix (1891–1969), looking back with characteristic directness, chose to rewrite the development of the art movement that can be considered the “third path” — alongside Abstraction and Expressionism — taken by progressive artists in the modern era. Situated somewhere between the grotesque and the classical, Dix’s harsh, unrelenting realism produced some of the most horrific depictions of the First World War, and some of the most critical portrayals of the Weimar Republic. Published to coincide with an exhibition at the Kunstmuseum in Stuttgart, Otto Dix and New Objectivity is the first publication to fully illuminate the Neue Sachlichkeit against the backdrop of the Weimar Republic and National Socialism. The exhibition brings together around 120 works to investigate what characterizes the New Objectivity and how variously the term has been used and interpreted since the 1920s. Some of Dix’s key works — including the “Metropolis” triptych (1928–29), the great psychological portraits and the landscapes with their hidden symbolism painted during the years Dix spent at Lake Constance — form the departure point for this exploration of his oeuvre. They are placed in context alongside the works of George Grosz, Franz Lenk, Werner Peiner, Franz Radziwill, Christian Schad, Rudolf Schlichter and Georg Scholz, creating a new perspective on this crucial chapter in German art history and illuminating these artists’ various reactions to the National Socialist aesthetic and art policy.

Описание: Ron Galella (1931 in the Bronx) moved to Los Angeles in his early twenties, where he trained as a photojournalist. In his free time he took pictures of the stars arriving at film premieres, selling them to the National Enquirer and Fotoplay. His photos are snapshots rather than portraits spontaneous, not staged, and extraordinarily authentic. Whether Jacqueline Kennedy, Marlon Brando, Greta Garbo, Andy Warhol, Sean Penn, Robert Redford, Muhammad Ali, Madonna, Mick Jagger, or Audrey Hepburn Galella managed to get them all in front of his lens. In addition to physical assaults, his photographic approach also caused him to be sued he had to promise Jacqueline Kennedy not to take another picture of her again as long as he lived. Andy Warhol, on the other hand, adored him, and Elizabeth Taylor used his images in her biography. In addition to his spontaneous paparazzi photographs, Galella also took staged pictures, commissioned by magazines such as Time, Rolling Stone, VOGUE or Vanity Fair. The publication presents more than one hundred of his astounding photos.

Описание: Robert Kennedy was the most imposing politician he ever met. And Johnny Depp is incredibly photogenic. Steve Schapiro (*1934 in Brooklyn) ought to know, because he has actually photographed them all: his expressive portraits of Martin Luther King, Jr., Muhammad Ali, Barbara Streisand, Marlon Brando, David Bowie, Jodie Foster, and Robert de Niro are part of our collective visual memory. Besides his work with the stars, Schapiro and his camera accompanied the greatest political and social upheavals of the sixties and seventies. These photographs have also achieved iconic status. This volume includes a selection of photos taken over a period of more than fifty. In the accompanying essays, Schapiro explains how they were created, describing his experiences in a lively, humorous way. Along with previously unpublished photographs, the book also features new works by the old master.
Tatlin: New Art for a New World

Описание: Influenced by Futurism, Fauvism, and Cubism, printmaker, set designer, and designer Vladimir Tatlin (1885 1953) made painting his artistic basis. Referencing Pablo Picasso s assemblages, Tatlin developed his Counter Reliefs, three-dimensional sculptural constructions out of wood, cardboard, metal, and wire. With these, he unhinged the laws of painting, creating his own genre of art as well as a new understanding of the materials he used. His visionary, unrealized project of building a tower to propagate the ideals and aims of the Russian Revolution left its mark on generations of architects, artists, and authors. Tatlin exploded the boundaries of artistic activity and brought rhythm and motion to sculpture. This publication provides systematic insight into his oeuvre and reflects the most current research, starting with the young artist s revolutionary élan.

Описание: Editor and P.S. 1/MoMA curator Klaus Biesenbach credits the late Susan Sontag with sparking the idea for this survey of Body and Action art in the course of their conversations about artistic approaches that describe and question the human condition. «Into Me / Out of Me» gathers work focused on the imagined, descriptive and performative acts of passing into, through and out of the human body — explorations and visualizations of the wet and the dry, the inner and the outer — and the physical exchange of the body with the material world. Spanning over 40 years and featuring an international group of more than 130 artists, it addresses the primordial relationship between the internal and the external in three chapters: «Metabolism» (eating, drinking, excreting); «Reproduction» (intercourse, conception, birth); and «Violence» (shooting, impaling, perforation). Featured works range from Hannah Wilke's unflinching self-portraits in illness to Matthew Barney's performance-based installations to Kara Walker's antebellum figures. Artists include Chris Burden, Valerie Export, Bruce Nauman, Carolee Schneemann, Kiki Smith, Andy Warhol, Vito Acconci, Patty Chang, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Douglas Gordon, Mona Hatoum, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ana Mendieta, Paul McCarthy, John Miller, Frank Moore, Carolee Schneemann, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Marina Abramovic, among many others.

Описание: Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov (born 1957) is a storyteller who roots his themes in melancholic, humorous reflections on everyday life. His ambitious new installation at Ikon Gallery in the U.K. combines drawings, paintings, video and objects, and includes works made prior to 1989 (when Bulgaria was under Communist rule) alongside later pieces for which he is better known.

Описание: The work of Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov (born 1957) balances political and social critique with deliberate naivete. The artist's activities incorporate small-scale drawing, sculpture and installation, translating his lived experiences under a totalitarian Communist regime into universally relatable expressions of anxiety and thwarted hope.
Vasily Kandinsky: From Blaue Reiter to the Bauhaus, 1910-1925

Жанр: Hatje Cantz Verlag
Год: 2013

Описание: Alongside his development of a revolutionary abstract style, Vasily Kandinsky (1866–1944) demonstrated an ambition to go beyond conventional easel painting. His famous large paintings with musical and theatrical associations transformed into veritable environments. The catalogue explores the evolution of a Gesamtkunstwerk in the work of Kandinsky including essays by leading Kandinsky scholars on painting as a total work of art, or the artist’s interest in music and theatre. Separated into three sections, it illustrates how Kandinsky’s fascination for the Wagnerian concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk and the principles of synesthesia developed into large-scale painting within the context of the two highly significant artistic groups Blaue Reiter and Bauhaus, as well as in response to the changing historical circumstances, last but not least, culminating in his large-scale decorative utopian murals and installations.

Описание: The Russian-Armenian painter Ivan Konstantinovitch Aivasovski (1817–1900) enjoyed international fame and rose to become a legend in his own lifetime, yet in the West only few are familiar with his work today. Although raised in ordinary circumstances, he even advanced to become court painter to Czar Nicholas I. On the basis of a selection of the painter’s most famous seascapes, this monograph provides the reader with insight into Aivasovski’s extensive oeuvre, relating it both to Netherlandish maritime as well as Romantic European landscape painting. The ship on the high seas in Aivasovski’s paintings is always an allegory of some kind: calm, watery surfaces reflecting light from the sun or moon alternate with roaring storms and tumultuous surf-palpable symbols for life’s perils. Coastlines and stretches of land, shipwreck motifs, mythological scenes, as well as highly dynamic images of waves that virtually catapult the viewer straight into the picture are also part of his repertoire.
Neo Rauch

Год: 2005
Рейтинг:
Описание: Almost singlehandedly, Leipzig school painter Neo Rauch has renewed the possibilities of allegory, politics and surrealism in contemporary painting. His epic canvases, with their disjunct components, resemble collages as much as painting, populated with characters seemingly plucked from momentous historical occasions — protestors, eminent-looking statesmen, soldiers, workers — as well as ordinary people engaged in bizarre, enigmatic actions of no apparent political/historical consequence whatsoever. The protagonists of these works, surrounded by floating symbols, abstract blobs and fragments of buildings and interiors, collide as if in some grand trans-historical continuum in which all eras come together. Realized in loud, garish hues partly informed by the artist's early exposure to Socialist Realism, Rauch's enigmatic pictorial narratives never vanish into explanation: «My paintings have something vital about them, like an animal, a living thing,» he says. «You don't have to understand them, just to feel that this creation, to the greatest possible extent, is at peace with itself.» Following major solo exhibitions in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (2007), the Pinakothek in Munich (2010) and the Leipzig Museum of Art (2010), this new major Rauch monograph accompanies an exhibition at Bozar Expo in Brussels, and provides the most up-to-date overview of his accomplishment. The best-known exponent of the Leipzig school of painting, Neo Rauch (born 1960) was born, reared and trained as an artist in Leipzig, where he continues to live. In August 2005, Rauch was awarded the chair of painting at Leipzig University. In 2010, he received a major museum retrospective, held jointly at the Leipzig Museum of Art and the Pinakothek. In 2011, a selection of the works from this retrospective then traveled to the Zach?eta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, Poland.

Описание: During the final years of his life, Ferdinand Hodler (1853 1918) continued to develop his painting, creating some of his most important and touching masterpieces. In series and variations he lent new, liberated form to his life s great themes: the beauty of the Swiss mountains and lakes, his fascination for women, the examination of his own life, and the confrontation with death. This is the first publication to provide an extensive overview of Hodler s late works from the years 1913 to 1918. They include self-portraits, the impressive series about the suffering and death of his lover, Valentine Godé-Darel, and numerous gorgeous panoramas of the Alps and Lake Geneva, painted in close-up or at a distance at various times of the day and year. One highlight is his group of figures, View to Infinity, a monumental mural.

Описание: Vladimir Tatlin (1885–1953) was one of the leading figures of the Russian avant-garde. His heterogeneous body of work ranges from paintings, costume and set designs for the theatre, and the invention of a new genre — the counter-relief — to architectural designs for a tower to propagate the ideals and goals of the October Revolution and the utopian flying machine known as the Letatlin. This publication is a summary of an interdisciplinary symposium that took place in late September 2012 at the Tinguely Museum in Basel, where researchers from around the world were invited to take stock of and reexamine the artist’s creative methods and his impact. The publication affords systematic insight into Tatlin’s oeuvre and reflects the current state of research.
Andreas Gursky (English, German)

Жанр: Hatje Cantz Verlag
Год: 2007
Рейтинг:
Описание: Andreas Gursky (*1955 in Leipzig) is one of the most important artists in the world to use large-format photographs as a means of expression. The Düsseldorf-based photographer is especially interested in congregations of people and the sites of their gatherings, ranging from the Tokyo Stock Exchange to mass raves. The realistic appearance of Andreas Gursky’s final images—the elements of which are adeptly reduced and digitally restructured—also allow for conceptual interpretation; they are always based on the interplay between accurate reproduction and abstraction. This opulent publication focuses on the artist’s most recent creations, which is on display at the Kunstmuseum Basel. Two new groups of works in particular, reflecting on Formula One races and the famous Arirang Festival, a meticulously choreographed mass spectacle in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, will be shown alongside the landscapes.

Описание: In his images, Marc Chagall (1887-1985) liberated the world from the chains of gravity and allowed it to enjoy the enraptured freedom of poetry. In the process, he was inspired by the folklore of his White Russian homeland, Wizebsk, as well as his Jewish ancestry, Christian iconography, and the expressive forms of international avant-garde art, which he explored more intensively after 1911 in Berlin and Paris. This special-price edition features an exclusive selection of over one hundred treasured works from all of Chagall’s creative phases: paintings, book illustrations, and gouaches, including works in the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Russian State Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Tretjakov Gallery in Moscow.
Georges Seurat: Figure in Space

Год: 2009
Рейтинг:
Описание: Georges Seurat (1859–1891), a man of consistently proper disposition, was called “the notary” by his painter colleagues, and yet he was a trailblazing avant-garde artist. No other visual theme so well illustrates the tremendous innovations in Seurat’s paintings and drawings as the focus of this volume: the figure in space. The artist’s dense weave of pencil strokes cover the paper, making his indeterminate, floating motifs either stand out or disappear, while distinct light and dark contrasts surround and accentuate the figures. In his paintings, Seurat transposed his subjects into his technique, Pointillism, as well as into his innovative compositions. In later pieces, he even repeated and varied human forms within a single work. For his increasingly geometrical visual composition, which subordinates the individual elements to a system, he earned the admiration of the Bauhaus.
Gerhard Richter: Large Abstracts
Жанр: Hatje Cantz Verlag
Год: 2008
Рейтинг:
Описание: Painting—its principles, boundaries, and possibilities—is the central theme of the extensive body of work by Gerhard Richter (*1932 in Dresden), an oeuvre has been characterized by stylistic contrasts since the very beginning. This elegant volume of color plates featuring profound essays by Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Beate Söntgen, and Gregor Stemmrich focuses on the artist’s abstract paintings, which have comprised a dominant portion of his collective works since the eighties. The book does not trace the development of form and content in the paintings, but concentrates instead on the paintings that thematically comprise a homogenous body of work. It is based on the assertion that Richter’s abstract paintings are the results of various painterly processes that are not guided in a particular direction by a content-related precept. The featured paintings were produced between 1986 and 2006 and place emphasis on large-format paintings characterized by a prodigious painterly density.
