Carlo Collodi's universally acknowledged masterpiece of children's literature The Adventures of Pinocchio was first published in 1883.This fairy-tale, at once modern and timeless, has been the object of innumerable literary, theatrical, choreographic, film, television and comic strip adaptations, as well as being translated into hundreds of languages and being put to music. The adventures and the figure of Pinocchio himself have also inspired a number of plastic artists, who have illustrated both Collodi's original Pinocchio and the many adaptations. Christine Nostlinger's The New Pinocchio, illustrated by Antonio Saura, is known to be one of the most delightful of these. Antonio Saura devoted the majority of his time from 1990 to 1992 to studying Carlo Collodi's The Adventures of Pinocchio and its various adaptations and analysing the illustrations made by other artists. Profoundly shaken by the death of his second daughter Ana and struck by the beauty and simplicity of the tale as told by Christine Nostlinger, he decided to provide the illustrations to The New Pinocchio. He quickly developed an entirely original Pinocchio, which stands out distinctively from all the other figures in his repertoire. The energy of life overcoming the pain of mourning, he dedicated this illustrated work to his grandson Pablo, who was two years old at the time.The work became an immediate success on publication and was quickly sold out, winning the prize for the Best Art Book published in Spain.

The pioneers mastered the constraints of their medium, and their works transformed the way we see the landscape. The Louvre collection of drawings by Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806) is one of the finest and most well-balanced there is. It provides an overview, from the beginning to the end of his career, through his different techniques and the variety of his themes, of the light-hearted determined and the feigned roguishness of one of the most popular and most misunderstood French artists. The drawn work of Leonardo da Vinci and his pupils is concentrated in a few major collections, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana of Milan, and the Windsor Castle Royal Library being the main ones. The Louvre holdings are modest in number — twenty-two originals — but top-ranking in quality and allow one to follow practically every stage of the painter's career. It was purchased in the nineteenth century by a Milanese collector Giuseppe Vallardi, and has expanded with recent donations and acquisitions. This ensemble is connected with all Leonardo's major achievements, including works of his very earliest Florentine period, and some of his later paintings, like the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne of the Musee du Louvre. Part of the text relates to the study of drapery, another to the portrait, and by extension, the morphology of the face; a field in which his pupils were soon to excel. The volume includes several drawings of Leonardo's pupils, held in the Louvre.

The art of southern and eastern Africa, unlike the better-known traditions of central and western Africa, is often overlooked. The complex history of the region, marked by migrations rather than settled kingdoms, and the very nature of the objects produced, seen as craft artefacts by western eyes, are the main reasons for this relative obscurity. The objects illustrated and catalogued in the book include rare figural sculptures, jewellery, regalia, prestige staffs carved with ornamental heads and decorations, walking/fighting sticks, headrests, snuff containers and the occasional ornamental but useful adornments which double as combs and snuff spoons. The source of distinctiveness for the artefacts of the southern African region lies in the pastoral and specifically nomadic nature of the cattle culture shared by the majority of the peoples in the region. The functional beauty of the objects and their small size are linked to the necessary ease to take them along as the need to move arose.

Ever since its invention in 1839, photography has had the ambition of reproducing everything and depicting the overall reality of the world. Given the long exposure times of the daguerrotype, the first photographic journeys were dedicated to landscapes and major monuments. Despite the technical obstacles, the attempt to produce a faithful or composed vision of people, of their singularity, their joys and sufferings, appeared by the end of the 1840s, linked to the realist approach of painting and the humanist philosophers. This book features a selection of documentary photographs including those by Felix Thiollier, which reveal his great human and artistic sensibility-depicting the work of the miners in the Saint-Etienne region. Also included are the photographs taken in Poland at the beginning of the 20th century in a Jewish ghetto, which underline the injustice of the fate of the children and the self-sacrifice of their relatives. The book discusses this new form of visual documentation and how it was embodied in the reproduction of major events, such as the barricades in rue Saint-Maur photographed by Thibault in 1848, and in the highlighting of the philanthropic projects recorded in the visits of Charles Negre to the Asile imperial de Vincennes during the 1850s, and in the photographs of explorers and missionaries by Charnay in Madagascar.
