On the 50th anniversary of Marilyn's death, this beautiful book is an elegant pictorial celebration of the beloved star by the Magnum photographers who immortalized her. It's been half a century since we lost Marilyn Monroe, but her presence in popular culture has never faded-due in part to the incredible abundance of photographs that were taken of her. Many of those pictures were taken by members of the Magnum photographic cooperative, and appear in this stunning collection that expresses every aspect of Marilyn's multifaceted persona. Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, Eve Arnold, Inge Morath, Philippe Halsman, Bruce Davidson, Dennis Stock, Bob Henriques, Erich Hartmann, and others capture Marilyn on and off the set. The images range from glamorous portraits to candid scenes of delicate intimacy. Marilyn is pictured filming movies such as Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes; also included in the book are Elliott Erwitt's renowned shots of Marilyn wrangling horses on the set of The Misfits, her last film. In richly toned black and white as well as lustrous color, these photographs reveal Marilyn's uncanny ease in front of the camera. Whether acting or exercising, putting on make-up or gracefully posing, Marilyn was a photographer's dream. This celebration of her life will be a treasured keepsake for her millions of fans.

This volume analyzes, from a new and innovative point of view, the life and works of Francesca Woodman through the photographs and writings that belong to her Roman sojourn.A precocious artist, a border-line personality between the American culture and the Italian culture, Francesca Woodman reaches the acme of her artistic parable in Rome that, to her, is the place and the moment where her aesthetics and style are developed to the fullest. By tracing back the author's Roman itineraries and by gathering the stories told by her friends, this study reconstructs Woodman's most significant encounters that happened between the Maldoror bookshop in Via del Parione and the ateliers of the Nuova Scuola Romana at the ex Pastificio Cerere in San Lorenzo.Through the writings and accounts recorded over a long period of research, this book highlights the echoes and references to Surrealism that can be found in Francesca Woodman's photos; her use of the body as a proper language; and the topic of the metamorphosis as a sequel of life, where death is no longer seen as a final lap. In her pictures the observer discretely approaches the images and timidly takes part in the private and precious conversation that takes place inside each shot. This essay shows a new and intimate side of this great photographer, taking the reader by the hand through an intimate journey where words and images intertwine to trace the contours of Francesca Woodman's universe.Isabella Pedicini was born in Benevento, Italy, in 1983. A journalist and a writer, she moved to Rome where she graduated, first with a BA and then with an MA, in art history at La Sapienza University. She collaborates on a regular basis with the gallery book shop «Il Museo del Louvre» and she writes for «Artribune», a magazine of contemporary art.

The third volume in an authoritative and comprehensive series, The Photobook: A History volume III provides a unique perspective on the story of contemporary photography through the genre of the photobook. Continuing in the vein of the first two volumes, Volume III is a study of the major trends and movements that have shaped the photobook genre globally since the birth of photography in the early nineteenth century. Volume III pays particular attention to photobooks published after World War II, covering contemporary themes of modern life, from diaristic photography of place and people to twentieth-century propaganda books and some of the finest works to emerge from the recent self-publishing boom. The Photobook volumes represent a valuable catalogue of rare and important photobooks, and since Phaidon published Volume I in 2004, are now regarded by academics, students and photobook bibliophiles as the definitive works on this subject.
