A Contractor's Guide to the FIDIC Conditions of Contract
Автор:
Год: 2013
Рейтинг:
Описание: This guide will help the contractor’s staff overcome some of the difficulties encountered on a typical international contract using FIDIC forms. The majority of FIDIC-based contracts use the Red Book (Conditions of Contract for Construction), so this book concentrates on the use of those particular forms. Supplementary comments are included in Appendix C for the Yellow Book (Plant & Design-Build) recommended for use where the contractor has a design responsibility. The Contractor is represented on site by the Contractor’s Representative who carries the overall responsibility for all the Contractor’s on-site activities. In order to provide guidance to the Contractor’s Representative and his staff, this book is divided into five sections: A summarized general review of the Red Book from the Contractor’s perspective. A review of the activities and duties of the Contractor’s Representative in the same clause sequencing as they appear in the Red Book. A summary of these activities and duties but arranged in order of their likely time sequence on site. This has the added intention of providing the Contractor’s Representative with a means of ensuring that documents are not only properly provided to the Employer and Engineer, but most importantly that they are provided within the time limits specified in the Contract. A selection of model letters is provided which make reference to the various clauses of the contract requiring the Contractor to make submissions to the Employer or Engineer. Various appendices. The guide is not intended to be a review of the legal aspects of FIDIC- based contracts; legal advice should be obtained as and when necessary, particularly if the Contractor has little or no knowledge of the local law. Armed on site with a copy of The Contractor and the FIDIC Contract, the Contractor’s Representative will be more able to avoid contractual problems rather than spend considerable time and energy resolving those problems once they have arisen.

A History of Political Thought

Автор:
Год: 2008
Рейтинг:
Описание: This book is a comprehensive introduction to the history of political thought, tracing the development of arguments and controversies from ancient Greece, through different forms of community, state and empire, to today's global concerns. Bruce Haddock highlights the bewildering variety of contexts that have framed political thinking, yet also displays structural features that have proved to be remarkably stable over time. An important theme in the book is the need to see political philosophy, even in its most abstract formulations, as a response to historically contingent circumstances, without limiting its relevance to those circumstances. The emphasis throughout is on political thinking as a response to hard choices. Major thinkers covered in this work include Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Machiavelli, Grotius, Locke, Spinoza, Montesquieu, Hume, Kant, Rousseau, Burke, Hegel, Marx, Mill, Lenin, Schmitt, Nietzsche, Foucault, Oakeshott and Rawls. The book treats political philosophy and theory as a tentative engagement with a fractured and controversial past. Yet political thinking remains the exercise of a burden of a responsibility that is inescapable for us. Haddock introduces a history that continues to shape our understanding of ourselves as political and historical creatures. A History of Political Thought will be of interest to students and scholars of politics, history and philosophy.

Children's Friendships: The Beginnings of Intimacy (Understanding Children's Worlds)
Автор:
Год: 2004
Рейтинг:
Описание: This latest book in the Understanding Children's Worlds series is a beautifully written account of children's early friendships from Judy Dunn, the leading international authority on childhood development. Drawing on evidence from studies on both sides of the Atlantic, it considers the nature and significance of such relationships for children's development and well-being.The book also features a foreword by Jerome Bruner, one of the most influential psychologists alive today.Three arguments run through the book. The first is that friends can matter to a young child in a way that is different to parents and siblings. The second argument is that our understanding of a child's development can be greatly enhanced by studying children within these relationships. The third theme is that the influence a friend has on a child depends on the quality of their friendship. In a final section, the author draws out the practical implications of research for parents, teachers and those who care for children. She discusses how to manage friendships at different developmental stages, how to help children with friendship difficulties, and what to do about 'trouble-making' friendships and bullying.

Culture and Development

Автор:
Год: 2000
Рейтинг:
Описание: This book introduces students to new ways of thinking about culture and development. The book integrates the recent scholarship in the area of cultural studies within the existing frameworks of development studies, which have primarily focused on issues of political economy and structural transformation. Rather than viewing culture as simply an attribute of the societies undergoing development, this text critically examines how «development» itself operates as a cultural process. The authors draw on theories of modernity, poststructuralism and post-colonial studies to show how development institutions, processes and practices are inevitably caught up in a web of cultural presuppositions, values and meanings. The authors use the themes of gender, tradition and identity, human rights and new communication technologies to explore the challenges that processes of cultural change pose to conventional understandings of development. The book concludes by considering the move beyond «development» to a «post-development» paradigm. The book is made up of thematic chapters which include outlines and overviews of the specific topics, as well as case studies to illustrate the issues. The authors have designed the book specifically for students and teachers and the material included has been class-tested during their own teaching.

Group processes

Рейтинг:
Описание: People's lives are inescapably bound with the groups to which they belong. Whether at home, work, or play human beings are essentially group beings. Thus, an understanding of behavior in group settings is a central task for social psychology.Group Processes aims to deepen our understanding of relationships within and between groups by means of three key ideas. First, groups are a source of social identity; our sense of who we are and what we are worth derives from our group memberships. Second, there is a constant tension in group life between its task and socio-emotional aspects; getting on with the job whilst also getting on with people. Third, group dynamics are frequently governed by comparison processes, both within the group and between the ingroup and various outgroups. In this comprehensively revised edition, Rupert Brown introduces readers to the major developments in the field of group processes in a clear and compelling way. All the chapters have been thoroughly updated and several new sections have been added. There are considerably extended treatments of such key topics as group cohesion, social comparison, leadership, social facilitation, group performance, socio-cognitive aspects of intergroup relations, and social identity processes. The new material is woven seamlessly into the existing structure of the book, integrating the latest theory and research with classic contributions from the past. There are many supporting illustrations from contemporary life throughout the text.
